Welcome to On architecture | Kids + Family
Anyone that has traveled outside of the area in which they grew up will very quickly realize that buildings tend to look different depending on the region you travel to. Architecture, the design and construction of physical structures, is very closely tied to culture and history. Architects are influenced by their own culture and also by the cultures and architectural styles that they have come into contact with.
If you look at any building that is more than a hundred years old, you will find that there is often a religious influence to the design and the architecture. A century ago in almost every culture, religion played a huge part and had a big influence on every day life. This can be seen in the physical structures built in those days. This was true both in Western and Eastern societies.
Architecture is a highly skilled profession. Those designing a building need to take many things into consideration other than how the building will look, when coming up with a design. It is not as simple as making something that looks pretty and putting it up where there is a space. Research is required.
An architect needs to have a complete and well-rounded knowledge and understanding of the environment where a building will be constructed. Not all land is equal. The depth of a foundation is not only affected by what will be built upon the foundation but also by the type of soil the foundation will be built upon.
Architects also have to research surrounding buildings and their impact on any new structure. They need to understand the affects of climate on the materials they want to use to build their structure. Basically, every aspect of a future structure needs to be discussed and planned for before the foundation of that building is ever laid.
Architects are not only involved in the development of brand new buildings but also in the renovation of existing buildings. If a building is to have walls broken down or added, an architect will work together with an engineer to decide whether it is feasible and if so how.
Architecture is very distinct, culture by culture and definitely continent by continent. You can easily watch a program on television, see an image and immediately identify which continent is being featured based on the design of the buildings and the distinct cultural decorations that they wear. European cities tend to feature large cathedrals with tall steeples, Asian cultures feature colorful temples with roofs that curve upwards and North American buildings tend to be large, modern and clean.
With a good understanding of architecture and its history, it easy to look at a building and immediately identify what period in history it was built in and on what continent.
